Our story

It was May 22th, 2011 and I was working as every day in my office in a Rehabilitation Center of Manatees in an Island called Itamaracá (Brazil) as an environmental educator. The telephone rang. There was a foreign tourist at the box office. I was one of the few people that could speak English at my work, that’s why they called me.

He was very shy, didn’t speak much. After showing him the animals, I took him to the small store inside the center. We sit at the table to eat and talked a little bit. He told me he has gotten a temporarily job as a welder in Itamaracá.

It was the end of my shift and he offered to make me company on the way home. I took my pink bike and we walked to my house. On the way he said he had some problems with his phone and asked me to call him. I did. Surprisingly, there was no problem.

After I got home, I got a message from him asking for my Facebook. We started chatting and he said he would like to see me again. After some days, we had our first date going to a pizzeria.

After there we went for a walk on the beach. It was a full moon, the sea breeze was touching my skin and making me feel a bit cold. It started to rain and we looked for a temporarily shelter to don’t get much wet. I started to shake from the coldness, he hugged me and we gave our first kiss. After that, we started seeing each other two or three times a week. I was falling in love.

Dimi and I on our first date in Itamaracá, Brazil.

It was beginning of August, we had spent two beautiful months together in that Island, but his job finished and he had to turn back to Europe. I was really sad, I really liked him and I didn’t know if I was gonna see him again.

We tried to keep in touch through social media, but he didn’t seem very excited about it. I realized that was not gonna work. So I sent him a message saying I couldn’t do it anymore. I cried so much!

After some days without contact, he sent me a message in Facebook saying he didn’t want to finish like that, he missed me and wanted to try to make it work somehow. I was so happy with that message, didn’t know how we would make it, but we decided to try.

After some weeks speaking on the skype almost everyday, he called me with a big smile “my boss wants me to turn back to Itamaracá to continue the job”. Wow!! I was so happy!!

We had nice moments in that Island!

By beginning of September he turned back and stayed 3 months more. During this time the relation got serious, we started calling each other “boyfriend and girlfriend”, which btw was decided in a bus stop, hahaha, pretty romantic! He even traveled with me to Fortaleza (where I come from) on my birthday in November to get to know my family. Meanwhile, we bought my tickets to Bulgaria, so I could also visit his family and spend Christmas with him.

During my Birthday in Fortaleza.

Beginning of December he turned back to Europe and after some weeks I traveled for the first time outside my country. My family didn’t like the idea, of course, even though they got to know him a little bit during our stay in Fortaleza.

I am not gonna lie, I was also a bit scared too, my first time traveling abroad and I’m afraid of traveling by airplane! Yes, that’s right! It was 23 hours of flying in total. When I finally got to Sofia, he was there waiting for me at the airport, and I felt safe again.

I got to know his friends and family, except for his mother, who lived in Germany. Unfortunately, just a few people could speak English, so I felt a bit lost sometimes. After two weeks I turned back to Itamaracá and we kept a relation by distance. Thank God for the technology and Skype!

First time I saw snow! I made Dimi pullover just to take this picture!

Happier than a mosquito on the brim of a chamber pot.

Our first Christmas together and Dimi’s father (Nedialco). Guys, in Bulgaria they have a tradition to put an uneven number of dishes on the table. Nedialco had done 6 but didn’t know what else to do, so he made pop-corn. So sweet!

In March, 2012 I flew to Germany to spend some time with him and get to know his mother. I really liked the country! When I turned back to Brazil, my boss said the financial situation of the project was not very good and he would have to fire some people, including me. So I started to think, how I could start my life in Europe.

Dimi and I agreed that Germany seemed like a good idea. He said he could easily get a job there and I like the idea of working as Aupair. It seemed like a good ideia to get to know better the culture, the language, and be closer to Dimi at the same time.

I started learning German by myself with courses I found on the internet, contacted different families through the website Aupair World and finally found one. We skyped and It was like “love at first sight”. We arranged all the documents and I traveled to Germany to start working as Aupair.

It was such a great experience! The family was so nice to me! After that I got a place at an University in Göttingen to make a Master. I’m currently writing my Thesis. And like I said, I don’t know where we will be in some months, but let’s see what God has prepared for us!

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand“. (Isaiah 41:10)
